Anyone knows an ant can't move a rubber tree plant...but he has high hopes, high hopes...oops there goes another rubber tree plant..." The lyrics from the old Frank Sinatra song are as motivational today as they were nearly seventy years ago. The world has always held a special place for losers who turned into winners, those who defied impossible odds to succeed, the simple things that became profound, the business starting in a garage that becomes the world's largest business! The world loves the little ant that grows into a giant!

 

There is no such thing as a bad business! I would suggest many businesses that fail do so because the owners never seek opportunity in what they do! The owner of a business must study and prepare. The preparation must include Imagination and creativity...without which opportunity itself might be literally 'stepped over'.... Let me explain:

 

The greatest diamond mine in India, the Golconda mines, which have produced arguably the greatest diamonds in the world were once owned by a farmer who wanted to find diamonds. He sold his farm to go searching for wealth. The man who happened to buy his farm found some unusual looking stones. He took the stones home and placed them on his fireplace mantel. They was later recognized to be a diamonds. The farm turned out to have Acres of Diamonds. The farmer who went in search of diamonds died penniless. The farmer who bought the farm became fabulously wealthy. A sad story how one man literally walked over a fortune because he did not know what a diamond looked like in its rough state. Study and preparation would have given him the knowledge to not miss the opportunity his farm presented.

 

In the 1850's a farmer wanted to move to Canada to enter the coal oil business with his cousin. His cousin would not hire him until he learned the oil business. The farmer studied all he could and after awhile he contacted his cousin and explained he had become very knowledgeable about the oil business. He cousin agreed to hire him and the farmer sold his small farm and moved to Canada. He sold his farm for $833.00.

 

The new farmer noticed that there was a creek which flowed behind his barn. The creek had been partially damned to prevent 'a dreadfully looking 'scum' from affecting the cow's drinking water. The 'scum' turned out to be coal oil. For 23 years, the farmer who had become an oil expert, had blocked the flow of coal oil on his own property. He waded, daily, through the oil he sought! The Titusville oil fields became the largest oil discovery in America up until Spindle Top in Texas.

 

In 1847, a California rancher sold his ranch and moved to Southern California. He moved  because he had heard gold was to be found there. The man who bought his ranch was named Colonel Sutter. He opened a mill and during the milling process, he discovered a yellow colored sand. The sand turned out to be gold! The Sutter mine opened and was soon to be the largest gold discovery in American history. A man sold his ranch to go looking for gold. Sadly, for years he had waded and walked on the very thing he sought!

 

The Indian farmer, the Pennsylvania farmer, and the California rancher sold what they sought. The three men made a cardinal error. They failed to study and prepare. Had they prepared properly they would have respectively concluded that diamonds don't always look like diamonds, that oil sometimes can conceal its identity, and gold doesn't always come in nuggets. Had they become students of diamonds, oil, and gold....they would have obtained fabulous wealth. One must be ever vigilant!

 

Several years ago, a young boy bought a used lawn mower. During the summers, while in high school, he mowed lawns. When he graduated from high school, he had no means to go to college; so, he decided to simply go to work. The work he chose was lawn mowing. It was a humble beginning but it was honorable work. While mowing lawns he recited a scripture from the Bible..."do not despise your humble beginnings..." He was inspired to do well! He held a dream in his heart and he chased it! 

 

The lawn business grew rapidly. The young man read and studied. He wanted to become the best at what he did. He became an expert at mowing lawns. He, also, became an expert in landscaping. At nights, he read and studied everything he could concerning his trade for he understood, " we must know what the world needs and then invest ourselves to supply that need and success is almost certain..."

 

After several years, the young man had become a millionaire. Wisely, he invested his profits into real estate. As his landscaping grew so did his real estate portfolio! Today, his wealth is measured in the tens of millions. By seeking opportunity in what he did, he became rich. By studying and preparing, he developed imagination and creativity. Those traits enabled him to find gold in blades of grass!
